‘Jesus and Mary have become weapons in hands of Israel-haters’

“The identification of Mary and Jesus as Palestinians is clear, and is quite pervasive,” wrote Modai. “Not a few of the Irish actually believe that Jesus was an Arab Palestinian! In a Christian country like Ireland, it shouldn’t be a sin for us to occasionally point out the historical fact that Jesus was a Jew.”

121219_jesusandmaryAnti-Israel activists in Ireland have printed and distributed Christmas greeting cards that claim if Mary, the mother of Jesus, was alive today, she would be unable to give birth to Jesus as documented in the New Testament because Israeli soldier would hold her up at the Bethlehem checkpoint as they do all Palestinian women.   These new greeting cards were announced the same weekend that the Israeli embassy in Irelandcaused a storm by posting to its official Facebook page that if Mary and her baby, Jesus, were in Bethlehem today, they would likely be lynched as Jews. Shortly after, the embassy deleted the post and issued an apology.

Several days later, Nurit Tinari Modai, deputy chief of mission at the Israeli embassy, explained the affair thus:

“The use of the symbols of Christianity in a political context is considered acceptable as part of anti-Israel campaigns, Ireland! These symbols have been used in such a way many times in the past decade. Jesus and Mary have become a weapon in the hands of those who hate Israel in Ireland, and our post on Facebook should be seen in the context of this local discourse and as a response to the anti-Israel Christmas cards.”

According to Modai, it has become clear from the debate surrounding the Facebook post that many in Ireland do not know the realities on the ground in and around Bethlehem.

The Israeli embassy gave as an example a number of hypocritical Christmas cards that depict Christian icons in a political context. One in particular shows Mary and baby Jesus surrounded by pictures of violence and suffering among which is a photo of what looks like an Israeli soldier aiming his rifle a Palestinian mother and child.

That particular postcard comes with a letter the publisher, the UCC Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the perpetuates the popular Irish myth that were Mary alive in our days, she would be unable to deliver Jesus as recorded in the New Testament because Israeli soldiers would have detained her at the Bethlehem checkpoint, because Mary was a Palestinian! As such, Mary would have been forced to give birth at the checkpoint, as all Palestinian women are apparently forced to do…

Another card shows the three wise men on the way to visit Jesus after his birth, but they are unable to reach Bethlehem because of the Israeli security wall.

If Jesus lived in Israel today…

Would he and his family be safe in Bethlehem? More importantly, does anyone remember that they were Jews?

Wednesday, December 19, 2012 |  Aviel Schneider – israeltoday.co.il

121219_jesusandmary“A thought for Christmas… If Jesus and mother Mary were alive today, they would, as Jews without security, probably end up being lynched in Bethlehem by hostile Palestinians. Just a thought…”

That was the message posted by an Israeli official to the Facebook page of the Israeli embassy in Ireland this week. It took only a matter of minutes for the post to raise such an outcry that the embassy was forced to delete it and issue an apology.

It is arguable if such an idea is correct or not, but the fact is that many people in Europe (and maybe the US) have forgotten the Jewish background of Jesus and his earthly family.

Everywhere you go in Europe, you are constantly confronted with two Jews – Jesus hanging on a cross and Mary with a baby in her arms. In restaurants, bars, and of course churches, there they are. And yet, a majority of Europeans no longer remembers that these two iconic figures are part of the Jewish people.

A year ago when Palestinians put on a provocative performance depicting Joseph, Mary and Jesus in front of an Israeli checkpoint near Bethlehem, nobody made a fuss about that. But the truth is that the family of Jesus is not a Palestinian family. They are a Jewish family.

Palestinians: It’s Christmas, and Jesus was a Palestinian!

Palestinian PM Salam Fayyad continues tradition of claiming that Jesus was a “Palestinian” martyr in effort to sever the Messiah’s ties to his real people, the Jews of Israel

* This is a slight variation on the same story we published last year, as the Palestinian Arabs’ trying to appropriate Jesus as a “Palestinian” hero is a recurring holiday theme in the Holy Land.

More than a billion Christians around the world are about to celebrate Christmas, commemorating the birth of Jesus, the promised Messiah. There is one thing the Palestinian Arabs hope you all remember during those celebrations – that Jesus was, in fact, a Palestinian (Arab).

It is nothing new for the Palestinians to claim that Jesus was a Palestinian. The Palestinian leadership gets in on the action all the time. Yasser Arafat used to openly declare as much as he kicked off Christmas from Bethlehem every year.

Arafat is gone, and current Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is a bit more subtle, but the media organs under his control are still being used to perpetuate this lie. Oh, and so is Abbas’ Western-backed, so-called “moderate” prime minister, Salam Fayyad.

“Christmas is an opportunity to celebrate the Palestinian identity of Jesus Christ,” declared Fayyad as he flipped the switch lighting a 50-foot Christmas tree in Bethlehem’s Manger Square last week.

The lie has fully permeated Arab society in the region.

In a December 3, 2010 interview with Palestinian Authority TV, Samih Ghanadreh from Nazareth was asked about his new book “Christianity and its Connection to Islam.”

Ghanadreh told the host that he remembers fondly how Arafat would label Jesus as “the first Palestinian Shahid (martyr),” to which the host matter-of-factly responded, “Jesus was a Palestinian; no one denies that.”

Palestinian Media Watch, which provided translation of the above interview, reported that earlier in 2010, the Communications and Education Authority of the ruling Palestinian faction Fatah issued this statement on its official website:

“If we are proud of the holiness of our land, then we are proud and pride ourselves that the first and most important holy woman among the nations and peoples is from the holy land: The Virgin Mary – the woman of love and peace – is of the nation of Palestine…”

A year earlier, Abbas’ appointed Mufti of Jerusalem, Mohammed Hussein, preached on PA TV that “Jesus was born in this land; he took his first steps in this land and spread his teachings [of Islam] in this land. He and his mother [Mary], we may say, were Palestinians par excellence.”

Among average Palestinians it is an ingrained belief that Jesus, the Messiah of Israel, was a Palestinian and even a pre-Islam Muslim. All historic or religious ties between Jesus and the Jews have been severed, just as they have severed all historic and religious ties between the Jews and this land.
