The profile was created in Hebrew under the name “Yahweh”, the four-letter Hebrew name of God, also known in English as the tetragrammaton.
Posing as the Almighty, the page’s creator regularly posts remarks poking fun at Judaism and its adherents.
“Will now try to break personal-best set 5,772 years ago and create the world in only five days,” read one of the page’s status updates. In response to angry comments, the author questioned, “How can you be so sure I’m not ‘Yahweh,’ the one true God? You don’t doubt page after page of fairy tales written in the Torah. Is an online page by God that unbelievable? Explanation, anyone?”
Without divulging his real name, the author of the page spoke to Israel’s Ynet news portal, revealing that he also runs another Facebook fan page under the title “Atheists, how do you do.”
The man admitted to formerly being religious himself, but said he now believes “that the world would be a better place without religion.”
“I’m fighting religion with its own tools,” he said. “I don’t know of any other way in which you can deal with religious claims, which I find to be irrational.”
He then turned around and said he didn’t understand why people were so upset by his mockery, and claimed to have received numerous death threats.
So far, 5,000 of Israel’s more secular citizens have “Liked” the page, though its author said he has no doubt Facebook will eventually take the side of those opposing his prank and shut down the “Yahweh” profile.
